Weight and lifespan are reference ranges from the breed guide. They vary by sex, lineage and individual dog and do not predict your dog’s ideal weight or lifespan. Read the care descriptions alongside the individual dog’s history.
Background and characteristics
The wire-haired Dachshund is one of three coat varieties of a breed built in Germany to go underground after badger. The wire coat was created by adding terrier blood, and that shows in the temperament: most owners describe the wires as busier, bolder and more mischievous than the smooth or long coats, with the beard and eyebrows to match.
Size and varieties
Size depends on which registry you read. The FCI divides Dachshunds by chest circumference and puts standards at roughly nine kilos, while the AKC lists standards at sixteen to thirty-two pounds. The range shown here spans both conventions, and miniatures are a separate, smaller category again.
Exercise and play
Exercise is modest, two walks of thirty to forty minutes, but what kind of activity matters far more than how much. Half of owning this breed is protecting the spine. Intervertebral disc disease is markedly more common in Dachshunds than in dogs generally, and stairs, jumping down from sofas, and long periods standing on the hind legs all raise the risk.
Ramps at the couch, a harness instead of a neck collar, and keeping the dog genuinely lean are the interventions that matter. Scent games, on the other hand, are ideal. A dog bred to work alone in the dark gets real satisfaction from finding hidden food.
Coat and everyday care
The wire coat sheds less than the smooth, but it needs different care: brushing once or twice a week and hand-stripping the dead coat two or three times a year. Clipping is quicker and many groomers default to it, but repeated clipping softens the texture and fades the colour. Wipe the beard after meals unless you enjoy a damp dog face on your knee.
Among inherited conditions, Lafora disease, a late-onset form of epilepsy, is documented particularly in miniature wire-haired lines, so recurring myoclonic jerks deserve testing rather than dismissal.
Home environment and care planning
Dachshunds are also loud for their size and quick to alert, which matters in an apartment or a townhouse with shared walls.
