English Springer Spaniel

A British flushing gundog bred to push birds out of cover. Biddable, affectionate and quick to train, but it needs close to two hours of real work a day and its heavy drop ears make chronic otitis a lifelong management job.

Background and characteristics

The English Springer Spaniel was built to go into thick cover and put birds into the air ahead of the gun. Because the dog had to work inside shotgun range, the breed was selected to stay close to its person and keep going all day. Both halves of that still show.

Springers are attached, quick to read what you want, and easy to teach. The same attachment, mishandled, turns into a dog that cannot be left alone.

Exercise and play

This is a high-energy breed by any standard. Budget roughly an hour twice a day, and make at least half of it something other than lead walking: retrieving, scent games, water work, a training session with real problems in it. A Springer whose exercise is met but whose brain is idle will find a job you did not assign, usually involving your belongings.

Be aware too that field-bred and show-bred lines have diverged noticeably in build and drive, so ask which one a puppy comes from.

Coat and everyday care

The coat is a medium-length double coat with feathering on ears, legs, and underline. Brush two or three times a week and have the feet, ears, and feathering tidied every six to eight weeks. Shedding is moderate and fairly constant rather than seasonal.

Before bringing this dog home

The thing owners underestimate is ear care. A long, heavily furnished ear leaf keeps air out and moisture in, which is exactly the setup for repeat ear infections. Check ears weekly and dry them after swimming or bathing.

Beyond that, ask a breeder about hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy, and phosphofructokinase deficiency, all of which have DNA or screening options, and be aware of the sudden-aggression episodes reported in some lines; they are uncommon, but they are a reason to look at the pedigree and temperament of the parents rather than only the puppy.

Home environment and care planning

For a suburban home with a yard, this is one of the easier medium breeds to live with, provided the exercise is genuinely delivered rather than intended. In a flat with a long workday, it is one of the harder ones.
