Background and characteristics
The Xoloitzcuintli, usually shortened to Xolo, is one of the oldest dog types of the Americas, and its name links the Aztec deity Xolotl with the word for dog. It comes in hairless and coated varieties, which can appear in the same litter, and in three sizes — toy, miniature and standard — spanning roughly ten to fifty pounds. Confirm which size you are looking at before you commit.
Missing or incomplete dentition in hairless dogs travels with the hairless gene and is a breed characteristic rather than a defect.
Temperament and living together
Temperament is calm, watchful and closely attached to its own people. A Xolo is affectionate at home and reserved with strangers, preferring to observe before approaching. Two walks of thirty to forty minutes suit most dogs, with standards appreciating a run or a hike on top.
Indoors they are dedicated burrowers into blankets and laps, so build alone-time tolerance deliberately from the start.
Coat and everyday care
Hairlessness does not mean no grooming; it means different grooming. Skin replaces coat as the maintenance job. Wash gently about once a week and keep products light — heavy oily lotions block pores and cause breakouts, and adolescent skin trouble is common but usually passes.
Bare skin sunburns like ours, so avoid midday sun in summer and use a dog-appropriate sunscreen or a light shirt when needed. In cold weather the dog cannot hold its own heat, so a coat is genuinely functional rather than decorative.
Home environment and care planning
One persistent myth deserves correcting: hairless does not mean hypoallergenic. Most human allergy responses target proteins in saliva and skin dander, not hair itself, so reactions are reduced but not eliminated. Spend time with an adult dog before deciding.
On the plus side, there is essentially no shed hair in the house, which is a real advantage in a small flat, and the breed is long-lived and generally healthy.
