Maple syrup

Caution

Pure 100% maple syrup is non-toxic but is essentially sugar water with no reason to be in a dog's bowl. The real hazard is sugar-free or lite pancake syrup, because xylitol in that bottle is an emergency.

More about this food

The thing to understand about maple syrup is that two very different bottles sit next to each other on the same shelf. The first is genuine 100% maple syrup, boiled-down sap with no compound known to poison dogs. A dog licking syrup off a plate is not a toxicology case. The issue is calories and sugar: about 52 calories per tablespoon, nearly all of it sugar. VCA advises keeping all treats within 10% of daily calorie intake and connects obesity in dogs to diabetes mellitus, osteoarthritis, heart disease, hypertension, bladder stones and anesthetic complications. A tablespoon of syrup more than doubles the daily treat budget of a 7 lb dog. A larger amount pulls water into the gut and produces loose stool, diarrhea and vomiting. Diabetic dogs should not get it at all. The second bottle is where the danger lives. Most of what Americans pour on pancakes is not maple syrup: Aunt Jemima, Pearl Milling, Log Cabin and every sugar-free or lite variant are corn syrup or sweetener products. When the sugar comes out, something replaces it, and if that something is xylitol the situation changes entirely. Per the Merck Veterinary Manual, doses above roughly 100 mg/kg have been associated with hypoglycemia in dogs, and doses above 500 mg/kg may cause severe hepatic insufficiency or failure. Hypoglycemic signs can appear within 30 minutes, or be delayed 12-18 hours when the xylitol is in a substrate that slows absorption, and signs of liver injury may not appear until 24-48 hours later. The FDA specifically advises checking the ingredient list for xylitol on products advertised as sugar-free or low sugar. If your dog got into syrup, go get the bottle and read the panel right now. If xylitol is listed, call your veterinarian, an emergency clinic, or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435 immediately, even with zero symptoms, and bring the bottle. If it was pure maple syrup and a small amount, leave water out and watch, but call immediately for lethargy, wobbliness, tremors, repeated vomiting or yellow-looking gums. Do not induce vomiting at home.

Frequently asked questions

My dog licked syrup off a pancake plate. Is that bad?
If it was 100% pure maple syrup, that amount is not a poisoning; leave water out and watch. Check the bottle first though. Anything labeled sugar-free or lite may contain xylitol, and that turns a lick into a call to your vet right now.
Isn't sugar-free syrup the better choice?
For a dog it is the worse one. If xylitol replaced the sugar, roughly 100 mg/kg is enough to cause hypoglycemia and above 500 mg/kg risks liver failure. Treat a sugar-free label as an instruction to read the ingredient panel, not as reassurance.
Can I use a little maple syrup in homemade dog treats?
Skip it. A tablespoon is about 52 calories of almost pure sugar, which blows past a small dog's whole daily treat allowance. If you want sweetness in a homemade treat, a small amount of plain pumpkin puree or mashed banana does the job better.
