Boerboel
A South African farm mastiff bred to guard property: affectionate with its own people, deeply suspicious of strangers, and heavy enough that handling skill matters more than grooming.

Weight and lifespan are reference ranges from the breed guide. They vary by sex, lineage and individual dog and do not predict your dog’s ideal weight or lifespan. Read the care descriptions alongside the individual dog’s history.
Background and characteristics
The Boerboel was built to guard South African farmsteads, and the job description shows in the dog. Large mastiff types brought by settlers mixed with local dogs into a broad-headed, thickly muscled guardian that assessed anything approaching the homestead. With family it is genuinely warm and often patient with children.
With strangers at the gate, the default is not welcome but evaluation, and that distinction is the whole breed in one sentence.
Exercise and play
Exercise needs are moderate: forty-five minutes to an hour a day. This is a dog that works by mass, not endurance, so mileage matters less than control. Build loose-leash walking, a reliable recall, and a rock-solid stay into daily life, because a two-hundred-pound dog that lunges will take an adult with it.
Do the leash work while the puppy is still light, and condition the dog to a basket muzzle early — not because you expect trouble, but because vet visits and travel are far easier with a dog that finds one unremarkable.
Coat and everyday care
Grooming is the easy part. A weekly pass with a rubber curry handles the short coat, and there is nothing to trim. Wipe and dry the loose skin around the muzzle after meals and baths, since anything left damp in a fold starts to smell.
Home environment and care planning
Owners underestimate how the temperament changes with maturity. Puppy socialisation is not a box you tick once. Around two years old, as guarding instinct comes up, the dog needs a fresh round of good experiences with strangers and other dogs or the world starts to shrink.
Health concerns include hip and elbow dysplasia, entropion and ectropion, heart disease, and bloat; the heavy build and broad face also make heat a real risk. Before committing, check local rules and your insurer, because several countries and many landlords and homeowner policies restrict mastiff-type guardians by breed name.
