Weight and lifespan are reference ranges from the breed guide. They vary by sex, lineage and individual dog and do not predict your dog’s ideal weight or lifespan. Read the care descriptions alongside the individual dog’s history.

Background and characteristics

The Fila Brasileiro worked the large estates of Brazil, driving cattle, tracking strays, and guarding property. The result combines mastiff mass with hound traits: loose skin, a heavy dewlap, long pendulous ears, and a good nose. The defining feature, however, is temperament.

Deep suspicion of strangers is treated as intrinsic to the breed rather than as a fault in individual dogs, to the point that breed judging traditionally assumes the dog will not welcome being handled.

Exercise and play

Physically the demands are moderate: forty-five minutes to an hour of steady walking a day, in cool conditions, suits the heavy frame and loose-jointed gait better than anything fast. What is not moderate is the handling workload. With a dog well over sixty kilograms, your instructions have to arrive before the dog finishes making its own assessment, which means daily obedience practice for the life of the dog rather than a puppy course and then nothing.

Coat and everyday care

The short coat asks for a weekly brush and no trimming. Drool is constant, and the folds of the dewlap need wiping and drying, especially after drinking or bathing.

Before bringing this dog home

New owners misjudge socialisation here. Early exposure narrows how strongly a Fila reacts, but it does not convert the dog into one that greets visitors. Households with frequent guests, children's friends coming and going, or shared entrances are a poor match; secure fencing, controlled doorways, and a reliable separation routine are the minimum.

Health issues include hip and elbow dysplasia, gastric dilatation-volvulus, entropion and ectropion, and low heat tolerance.

Requirements to check before ownership

Legally, this breed is restricted in many places and prohibited outright under the UK's dangerous dogs legislation, and owning one usually complicates insurance and rental agreements. Anyone considering a Fila should treat those constraints as part of the breed's description, not as paperwork to sort out later.
