Central Asian Shepherd

A giant livestock guardian from the Central Asian steppe, known at home as the Alabai. Calm indoors and moderate in exercise needs, but it decides for itself who is welcome, so secure fencing and an experienced owner are non-negotiable.

Weight and lifespan are reference ranges from the breed guide. They vary by sex, lineage and individual dog and do not predict your dog’s ideal weight or lifespan. Read the care descriptions alongside the individual dog’s history.

Background and characteristics

The Central Asian Shepherd developed across the steppe and mountain country running from Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan into Kazakhstan, living with the flock rather than at the shepherd's heel. Its work was to sit out the night alone and judge for itself whether an approaching animal or person meant harm. The modern dog has not travelled far from that brief.

Indoors it is quiet, often genuinely affectionate with its family, and undemanding. Outdoors, and especially at the boundary of what it considers its ground, it reaches its own conclusions about your visitors.

Exercise and play

Exercise needs are lower than the size implies. An adult does well on roughly an hour of steady walking spread across the day. Distance running and repetitive drills buy you nothing and cost the joints, and this breed matures slowly, so keep puppies off stairs and away from jumping down until well past their first birthday.

What the dog actually wants is ground to patrol and a sightline worth holding.

Coat and everyday care

The double coat comes in shorter and longer types. One or two brushings a week covers most of the year, with daily work through the two seasonal moults, and the sheer volume of hair from a dog this size surprises people. There is no trimming and no groomer bill.

Home environment and care planning

The error newcomers make is treating puppy socialisation as a finished job. Guardian behaviour usually switches on somewhere between eighteen months and two years, and the dog who greeted everyone at six months can be a different animal at two. Management matters as much as training here: tall, sound fencing, and a decided plan for deliveries, tradespeople, and guests before they arrive.

Check your homeowner or renter policy and any local ordinance too, because large guardian breeds are named by some insurers and landlords in both the US and the UK. On health, watch hips and elbows, and take gastric dilatation-volvulus seriously: feed two or three smaller meals and keep the dog settled afterwards. Heat is the other limit, since a coat built for a dry continental winter struggles in humid summer air.
