Weight and lifespan are reference ranges from the breed guide. They vary by sex, lineage and individual dog and do not predict your dog’s ideal weight or lifespan. Read the care descriptions alongside the individual dog’s history.

Background and characteristics

The Kuvasz comes from the Hungarian plain, where it stayed with sheep and cattle and looked after the farmstead. It was not a herder moving stock from place to place but a guardian holding ground, and for a stretch of its history it also worked as a hunting and estate dog for the nobility. That inheritance shapes the dog you get.

With its family a Kuvasz is soft, quiet, and closely attached. With strangers it starts from observation rather than greeting, announces what it does not like, and then puts itself between you and the problem.

Exercise and play

Plan on two walks a day of around forty minutes at a working pace. The breed has stamina but no need to be turned into a running partner, and hard exercise during the long adolescence is a bad bargain for growing joints. What settles a Kuvasz is a chance to look over its territory plus a little thinking work each day, so fold some scent games or short obedience into ordinary walks.

Coat and everyday care

The coat is a thick double coat under a wavy outer layer. Twice-weekly brushing holds it through most of the year, but during the spring and autumn moults white hair keeps coming no matter how often you brush. Do not clip it down in summer, since the coat insulates against heat as well as cold.

Dry it right through to the skin after a bath.

Temperament and living together

What new owners misjudge is the nature of the training. A Kuvasz understands you perfectly well and is deciding whether the request is worth honouring right now. Repetition bores it, and heavy-handed correction damages the relationship you actually need.

Short sessions, clear rules, and an owner who is visibly handling the situation will get you much further. On health, ask about hips, elbows, and thyroid function, and treat gastric dilatation-volvulus as a real risk: feed split meals and keep the dog quiet after eating.

Home environment and care planning

One practical note for suburban or urban owners. Territorial barking is the job, not a fault, and it carries. If your neighbours are close, start habituating the dog to ordinary outdoor noise early and go and check whatever it flags rather than only telling it to stop.

A securely fenced yard is close to essential, because a Kuvasz left to define its own boundary will define a generous one.
